In survival mode, there’s no point in investing in building a deep, long term model of yourself.
It’s just going to change tomorrow anyway. The only identity that matters is who I am right now.
Our identities, therefore, are just a chain of evidence without any meaningful glue to hold them together. More recent events are weighed more heavily than past events because they are more relevant for navigating the world right now.
